What FSC-certified actually means (and what it doesn't)

Every few months, a toy comes back to us for repair. Sometimes it's a cracked block, sometimes a loose peg, occasionally something more serious. We log every repair. After twenty years, that log tells a story.

What actually breaks

The honest answer: almost nothing, if the toy was made well to begin with. The repairs we see most often are surface wear — a finish that has dried out, a corner that caught something hard. Structural failures are rare.

  • Finish wear: the most common. Beeswax dries out over years of play. A ten-minute re-oiling at home fixes it.
  • Loose joints: usually caused by leaving a toy in a wet environment. Rare with our designs.
  • Cracks: almost always in the end grain of a poorly chosen piece of wood. We reject those at the workshop.

What plastic never had to prove

Plastic toys don't need repair promises because no one expects them to last. When a plastic toy breaks, it goes in the bin. That's by design — it's what makes the economics work.

Wood is different. A well-made wooden toy is expected to outlast its first owner. Our repair data confirms this: the average Lil Woods toy we repair is six years old. The oldest we've seen was made in 2009.

What this means for how we make things

Knowing that a toy might come back to us in fifteen years changes how we think about design. Joints need to be repairable. Finishes need to be renewable. And every toy needs a name — so we know what wood it is when it arrives, and we can match it exactly.

  2. 2.Natural beeswax oil finish — renewable at home, replaceable in the workshop.
  3. 3.Mortise-and-tenon joints where possible. No glue-only construction.
  4. 4.Every product logged with batch and material record.
